Check whether it can be made

Review your design before committing to a build.

Identify missing information and manufacturing issues in an AI-assisted product design. Review mechanical parts, PCB inputs, sourcing and assembly before prototyping.

How do I know whether my AI-assisted design can be manufactured?

A design for manufacturing (DFM) review checks the design against the intended materials, fabrication methods and assembly requirements. Make It Physical can review mechanical and electronics inputs, identify gaps and scope any changes needed before a prototype build. A rendering or AI-generated CAD model alone does not confirm manufacturability.

What a mechanical review looks at

The review starts with intended use, overall dimensions and the parts the design must fit. Depending on the chosen process, considerations can include wall thickness, tool access, hole geometry, material, fastening, finish and tolerances.

A CAD model may not state which dimensions are critical. Drawings, mating-part measurements and a description of loads or movement help define those requirements. The review scope must match the project: manufacturing feedback does not automatically include structural analysis, safety validation or certification.

What an electronics and assembly review looks at

For electronics, useful inputs include schematics, PCB layout or manufacturing files, a BOM and a description of expected operation. We review the available fabrication and assembly information, component sourcing questions and the physical interfaces that affect integration.

Design for assembly asks how the parts will actually come together: connector access, fasteners, cable routing and the order of assembly. Test access and the criteria for a working prototype should be agreed before the build. Circuit validation and firmware work are separate scope items where needed.

The output should support a decision

The proposal defines the review deliverables. These can include recorded design questions, manufacturing feedback, recommended changes and the revised files specifically included in the scope. It should be clear which decisions you need to approve and what information is still missing.

Review may show that a concept needs substantial development or a different process. That finding is useful before money is committed to fabrication. A review does not guarantee that every issue will be found; prototype testing and agreed inspection remain part of the development process.

Prepare the right revision for review

Send the current design files and identify their revision. STEP or other supported project files, drawings, PCB data and a BOM can be shared through the inquiry form. Explain the material and quantity you have in mind and distinguish firm requirements from preferences.

If you only have an image, begin with concept feasibility rather than assuming there is a complete design to check. For a confidential project, request an NDA before sharing detailed files. Review cost and timing are confirmed after the scope is understood.

Questions about this starting point

What does DFM mean?

DFM means design for manufacturing: reviewing a design in relation to the process that will make it. It helps identify manufacturing constraints and missing information.

Are design changes included in a review?

Only if they are listed in the agreed scope. Feedback, CAD revision, electronics development and fabrication are distinct deliverables.

Can you review a design that was not made with AI?

Yes. Conventional CAD, PCB designs and existing prototypes can be submitted for the same project review.
